Now becoming one of the most sought after speakers on the circuit Dean Saunders is a former player with a wealth of stories about his vast career which has taken him too many places.
In his football career Dean started at Swansea City, joined Cardiff City on loan before moving on to Brighton, Oxford United, Derby County, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Galatasary, Nottingham Forest, Blackburn Rovers, Sheffield United, Benfica and Bradford City.
Appears regularly on BBC TV and SKY as a summariser and is constantly in demand.
Dean played in over 700 games and scored 254 goals, capped by Wales on 75 occasions, scoring 22 goals for his country.
After retiring from football in 2001 he became a coach and then moved on to Newcastle United in 2004 initially as striker’s coach, and then first team coach under old boss Graeme Souness. He left Newcastle in 2006 and took his coaching badges and was appointed assistant manager of Wales in June 2007.
Became manager of Conference side Wrexham and took them to the Play- offs before joining League one side Doncaster Rovers where once again he took them in to the promotion places before leaving to join Championship side – Wolves, a short spell at Molineux to say the least departing at the end of the season.
Was taken on as interim Manager of Crawley Town for the second half of the season
2014/15 and left at the end of the season. Appointed manager of Chesterfield for 2015/16 season was contender for October Manager of the Month, lost four matches in November and lost his job! That’s football.
He was one of the Welsh national side’s most prolific scorers. Made his debut as a 21-year-old against Ireland in 1986, no Welsh fan will ever forget his goal which secured a famous 1-0 win over Brazil in Cardiff in 1991. He won the last of his caps against Ukraine in 2001 just a few months short of his 37th birthday.
In December 2015 Dean was invited to speak at the Annual PGA Scotland lunch in Glasgow alongside Paul McGinley and then also invited to speak at the Annual PGA Lunch in The Grosvenor House Hotel and put on an exceptional performance. Dean also spoke in Manchester at the Annual Football Speaker of the Year Lunch and came home with the trophy with a very entertaining talk. In December 2016, Dean successfully defended his title and came home once again as Football Speaker of the Year 2016. He was invited back to speak at the event in 2021 and once again triumphed as the Football Speaker of the Year.
Throughout the European Championships of 2016, Dean was a regular on BBC TV covering the live matches and also MOTD with many interviews on BBC Radio5Live. He’s also a regular on Sky Sports covering live matches and also Goals on Sunday as well as appearances for BT at Premier League and Champions League matches.
Appears regularly on BT television, SKY and BBC. TalkSport breakfast show with Alan Brazil and also morning show with Jim White.
Working for TalkSport at the Euros in 2021 covering the Wales matches.
Recently presented a documentary on grass roots football for BBC Wales.
